As you may already know, it’s very important to brush your teeth often when you have braces. In fact, it’s so important that you should brush after every meal and right before you go to bed at night. To help make your brushing routine more effective, our orthodontist, Dr. Frank Iuorno, has some brushing tips for you.

First, clean each tooth equally. You can do this by spending about 10 seconds scrubbing every tooth. Make sure to clean the front, back, and chewing surfaces as well as around the bracket and under the wire. As you clean your smile, try to use the same cleaning technique for each tooth.

Second, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste to clean your teeth, braces, and gums. These oral hygiene tips can clean the mouth as well as care for the teeth and gums. They can also strengthen the tooth enamel and help you have a healthy smile.

Third, gently brush your braces. All you need to do is press the toothbrush against the appliance so the bristles spread around the brackets and through the space between the wires and teeth. Then, scrub. Make sure you clean every space around the braces so you remove the plaque and food particles that are there. An electric toothbrush might be helpful when doing these things.
